I was just listening to a few minutes of audio from September 11, 2001 and wondering if we should air it again this year on Magic 98.
Bob Bonner and I were doing the Magic morning show that day. We began with a bulletin that an airplane had crashed into the World Trade Center, and assumed it was an accident. On TV we saw the second plane hit. Then Bob had the news of the Pentagon crash. At that point we hit the CNN button and Magic 98 carried news all day.
I remember driving to work the next morning before dawn. A huge American flag, illuminated by spotlights, was flying over a Beltline business. Paul Simon’s “American Tune” was playing on Magic.
I don’t know a soul who’s not been battered.
I don’t have a friend who feels at ease.
I don’t know a dream that’s not been shattered.
Or driven to its knees.
Oh, but it’s all right, it’s all right.
We could skip the 9/11 audio this year. It’s incredibly sad. A generation was not alive then. For many the events since then have splintered into political debate. We’ll air it anyway.
