“Alexa, Open Magic 98!”

Written by on December 21, 2017

If you have an Amazon Echo device, you’ll want to know how to get it to play Magic 98. Here’s how:

First, some definitions:

  • Alexa is Amazon‘s voice service, used by different types of Echo devices such as Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Tap, and Echo Show.
  • Skills are similar to apps on your phone. Just as you interact with your phone by using apps—reading e-mail, playing Words With Friends, and so on—you interact with Alexa by using skills.
  • Default skills come pre-enabled on your Alexa device.
  • Custom skills are searchable in the Alexa Skills Store. You’ll need a custom skill to listen to Magic 98. (Don’t worry; it’s free.)

There are three ways to enable the custom Alexa skill for Magic 98:

  • Search the Alexa Skills Store for the Magic 98 skill and enable it.
  • Open the Alexa companion app on your mobile device, search for the Magic 98 skill, and enable it. (Get the Alexa app from the App Store or Google Play.)
  • Say, “Alexa, enable the Magic 98 skill.”

You have to enable the skill only one time.

After your Magic 98 skill is enabled, here’s how you use it: simply say, “Alexa, open Magic 98.”

Keep in mind that saying “open Magic 98” is preferable to saying “play Magic 98.” Here’s why: If you say “play,” Alexa will play Magic via Tune In Radio, a default skill that comes with your device. That’s fine, but if you say “open Magic 98,” you will open our specific Magic 98 skill, which gives you access to our skill’s features. That’s better. Right now, you can listen live. More features will be coming to our skill in the weeks ahead.

If you have questions or problems, get in touch. Have fun!
