Friday, 4/20/12

Got a bunch of baby chicks the other day...yep more chickens. We will end up with a flock of 16 in all. We have all kinds of breeds...Australorpes, Delawares, Buff Orpingtons, Easter Eggers, Silver Laced Wyandottes, and Turkens. They are really cool and friendly.
Nothing like farm-fresh eggs. I know all about it. My mom used to raise chickens. She had 3000 of them on the farm when I was a kid. She called her operation Kackle Korners. Clever woman.  Living out the second rustic phase of my life. Next on the hit parade...a cow...or steer more accurately.

I'm thinking of changing my dog Ziggy's name. I think i'm going to call him "Coney." That's because he is now forced to deal with what is basically an oversized plastic cone around his head...so he won't mess with his surgery site. We just had him neutered, and there were complications the first time, so he needed another surgery this week to correct a problem. He lost even more treasured parts in the process, but seems okay now. It's the cone thing though. It's obviously frustrating for him...and us for that matter. He tries to negotiate around the house, but keeps bumping and catching his cone on everything. He seems so sad. Hang in there Zig. This too shall pass.


Friday 4/6/12

Man, am I glad I resisted temptation...and laid in the weeds during the 'summer in March'.  If I hadn't, we would have been running around half the night Thursday trying to save all kinds of plants.  As it is, we had plenty to cover.  Perennials fooled into thinking it was time to burst forth in all their spring splendor.  I know a lot of people are in the same boat.  I feel really bad for those people who run orchards and vineyards.  There have been all kinds of stories about the great lengths growers are going to, to save their valuable crops they make their living on as Mother Nature starts her evening out process.  I have to admit, I'm getting anxious.  I absolutely love to garden if you haven't guessed.  Soon enough.

I'm going to whip up my mom's recipe for scalloped potatoes and ham on Easter Sunday.  The kids have all agreed to come over for dinner so I'm looking forward to it.  No box mixes here...no sir.  Totally from scratch...and if I do it right, worth the effort.  Every time I make this dish, it reminds me of mom.  I miss her and her cooking, big time.  Happy Easter!
