My Favorite Summertime Treat
Sara Freeman gave me some tomatoes from her garden, but they were not red.  I put in a special request for green tomatoes so I could make my favorite late summer dish which is fried green tomatoes.  Sara said she never has tried them.  She found a recipe online, but told me they didn’t turn out very well.  After she told me the recipe, I understood why they didn’t turn out.  Here’s how I make mine to be tasty and delicious every time.  It’s kind of a grandma recipe with no measurements, but you will need:

2-3 green tomatoes sliced
A little flour
1 stick of butter
1 large beaten egg
Cracker crumbs-not too finely ground…you’ll want some crunch
Salt and pepper to taste

Melt the butter over medium heat in a large skillet.  Add  the salt and pepper to your cracker crumbs.  Coat the tomato slices with flour, dip in the egg wash and coat with the cracker crumbs.  Arrange in a single layer in the skillet and let fry until brown then flip.  It’s a tangy treat.  Try it and see what you think.

Love My Fitbit
I was having lunch with a girlfriend about a month ago when she pulled out this little green device and handed it to me.  Naturally, I asked her what it was.  She said it was her Fitbit and it helps her keep track of how many steps she takes a day and calculates them into how many miles she walks a day.  It also recognized how many stairs she climbs, how many calories she burns and even how she sleeps at night.   I thought it was the coolest thing I’ve seen since I bought my first cell phone so I went out and bought one for myself.  She and I are Fitbit “friends” so we can keep track of how many steps each of us is walking and compete or encourage each other to step it up.  It syncs up with your smart phone or computer to give you detailed daily stats.  You can earn badges for miles walked, stairs climbed, calories burned, etc. ... and it sets goals for you to achieve higher badges.  I can even chart my diet so I know how many calories I’m putting in vs. burning on a daily basis.  It’s kind of like my own personal trainer and costs a LOT less.  I gotta say I love my Fitbit and I wear it all day.  The Fitbit might not be for everyone, but it certainly is a big incentive for me to walk an extra mile ... or two ... or three and to always be conscious of the healthful and not so healthful things I eat and drink.  I highly recommend the Fitbit for anyone who is trying to live a very healthy lifestyle.  It’s your little buddy that can keep you on track!
