Book Worm

While I’ve been laid up waiting for my ankle to heal I have been reading like a fiend.  My neighbor brought me a book while I was in the hospital.  It was “The Other Boleyn Girl” by Philippa Gregory.  Now, I realize this book was published 10 years ago and a movie was made of it in 2008 starring Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson.  I never saw that movie as I believe the critics panned it.  But the book….oh, my goodness, the book.  It is so intricately written, fiction based on fact, heart pounding, page turning, cannot put down, sweaty palms written that I wonder why no one ever turned me on to this book when it first came out.  I suppose my love of history easily led me down the path of the first few pages so that I instantly became hooked.  The most wonderful thing about this book is that it caused me to research King Henry VIII and what life was really like under his rule and how he, as insane as he appeared to be, changed history.  This book placed my own head right on the chopping block with Anne Boleyn, feeling her fear, her weariness of trying to please a narcissist, her short life as a pawn in a king’s court.  How incredibly different the lives of women are in this century, let alone this country.  How incredibly fortunate we all are to live in this century, let alone this country.  If you’re looking for a good read I recommend this book.
