First Words from the Moon

“Tranquility base here.  The Eagle has landed.”

Every year in July I think of Neil Armstrong’s first words from the moon, and every year I get chills.

Being a little kid in the 60s meant seeing lots of space missions on TV.

I remember Christmas eve 1968 at our house on Orchard Drive in Oregon when we heard the Apollo 8 crew circling the moon.  Miss Melby turned on our 4th grade classroom TV when the Apollo 13 crew was in trouble.  But nothing compared to the Sunday night in July 1969 when we watched the Apollo 11 crew walk on the moon.

With just seconds of fuel remaining, Neil Armstrong guided the ship over rocky terrain and found a safe place to land.  NASA was monitoring his heart rate, which was extremely high.  That’s a cowboy!
