Through the Eyes of My Boys

I'm sure you remember the insane amount of summer fun you had growing up. I recall when we were permitted to go play outside for a little bit in our jammies after taking a bath just to soak up the extra minutes of the day while we could. I remember washing my feet in the bathroom sink because they were so dirty even I couldn't bare to put them into my soft, cozy bed. Summer is fun. Period.

I'm so thankful to be experiencing that kind of childhood fun all over again through the eyes of my boys. They're now 4 1/2 and almost 2, and they run and laugh and SWEAT . . . oh my gosh they sweat. . . and I'm just so grateful. I don't take being a mommy for granted for even one second and we're just having so much fun! I hope you're enjoying the long summer days at your house as well!

Mad Enough

That's it!! I'm not hitting my breaking point . . . that happened a long time ago. But I'm finally ready to vent because I'm mad enough.

Beyond the guns, beyond the political beliefs, beyond sexual orientation, beyond religion . . . wipe it all away, wipe it from your brain...and WAKE UP! We are human beings. WE are human beings. The same blood, the same organs. We all came into this world the same stinkin' way, so why on Earth do some of us think we have the power to make sure others leave this world in a way unheard of by nature? And why are some OK with that? Two people don't have to agree on one single thing in order to be kind to one another. I'm appalled that politics have even entered the conversation at this point . . . families are still in the raw, horrible, gut-wrenching stage of grief. Moms are going to be burying their babies.

I have no idea how to make this better. I have no idea how to make this go away. I do know that this is NOT the time to be crawling up onto your pedestal and making this into anything other than the horrific loss of human beings that it is. Please . . . if you give yourself a chance to really chew on everything that happened In Orlando over the weekend it should make you sad. It should make you feel hurt in your soul. If it doesn't . . . then you're part of the problem.

Rest in peace, my friends.

The Real Meaning of Memorial Day

I'm going to begin by saying "thank you" for keeping military personnel in your thoughts on Memorial Day. I'm glad that you know, and are hopefully teaching your kids, that it's not just a three-day weekend to grill out and drink. But every time that I see someone post or hear someone say, "Happy Memorial Day," I want to gouge my eyes out. And every time I saw someone post "Thinking about our veterans today" on Facebook, I wanted to gouge my eyes out. I appreciate what they're trying to do, but I wonder why.

Because here's the breakdown: Veterans Day is November 11th. This is the day we can "think about veterans." Veterans are, by the way, people who have served in the military but do not anymore. Armed Forces Day falls on the third Saturday of May. This is the day to honor everyone currently serving. And Memorial Day is the last Monday in May. On Memorial Day, we honor fallen military men and women. Those who fought and didn't come back home.

Memorial Day can be a day that familes dread, whether their loss was recent or if it was decades ago. It still hurts. It's a day those who came home safely may feel a little guilty, and they wonder what the families of their military brothers and sisters who didn't come home are doing that day. So you understand how disrespectful it is to say "Happy Memorial Day," or to incorrectly post a picture with your kids in red, white and blue with a #thankingourveterans.

I apologize for my little rant, but hope you will keep it in mind as these holidays come and go. They're filled with pomp and pageantry and parades and ceremonies . . . but they're much more real than that for those who were, or are, in the military, as well as their families.
