Strawberries

If you’ve ever picked up strawberries at the grocery store, cleaned ‘em up and put them in a bowl in the fridge ready for snacking as an attempt to grab the strawberries rather than the bag of chips...good for you! The only problem is, when you opened the fridge and took out the bowl all of the strawberries were dark red and wrinkled.  That’s because you should only wash strawberries when you’re just about to eat ‘em.  Otherwise you’ve got one to three days to finish them up.

Strawberries are something kids and adults alike love...and that’s such a great thing because one cup of strawberries is only about 50 calories.  You’ll get lots of Vitamin C and no fat or sodium.  Strawberries are ridiculously yummy on a spinach salad with goat cheese and fat free poppyseed dressing.  You can use them on top of pancakes rather than syrup and when you mix them with frozen yogurt or fat free pudding it feels like you’re cheating, but you’re not.

Q: What does eating 'clean' mean?

A: I just got the low-down on this from listener, Allison.  She said she and her husband, Brian eat absolutely no processed foods.  Lots of fresh chicken and turkey without the skin and as you can imagine, lots of fruits and veggies.  Quinoa, kale, spinach, fish, whole wheat pasta, oatmeal with cinnamon, eggs, flaxseed, nuts and coconut water are a couple other things that make the list on this way of life.  All together it's an attempt to take out the pre-packaged, frozen and canned food and get back to the days of making our meals and snacks from scratch.  And this doesn't take as much time as it sounds.  Allison says a snack she loves is plain Greek yogurt with some real maple syrup in it.  Way to go Allison and Brian!
