The Lake Was Shakin'

Hope you got a chance to catch the Shake the Lake fireworks show last weekend. It was really cool. We biked into the event, heeding the advice about not trying to drive and park. It was good advice, as it turned out. The plan was to hit Lake Monona on the kayaks for the light show, but the weather forecast changed our plans. Good move, considering the show made it just under the wire before that storm blew in. It would have been uncomfortable at the very least to be on the lake with all that lightning and monsoon rain. Either way, hats off to Festival Foods and the Madison Mallards for keeping a cool summertime Madison tradition alive.

No Words

I'm a guy who makes a living putting words together. But I have to say I find it difficult to put into words just how badly I feel for the families and friends of the people who were killed in our country's latest tragic shooting incident in Orlando. What possible words of comfort are appropriate when someone loses, in many cases, the light of their life to nothing more than misguided hate? There are differing opinions on what may have motivated the guy who did the shooting. He himself claimed it was in the name of the holy war being waged against the West. Others, including the shooter's father, claim it was all over the shooter's disdain for gay people. Either way, it all boils down to hate, intolerance, and lack of compassion for people.

Here's hoping that someday we'll look back on these sorts of incidents with incredulity and say . . . thank goodness that doesn't happen anymore.
