In 2006 in Madison, Dane County area, I founded PAWWS to Heal, a non-profit which offers animal assisted therapy and animal assisted activity for children victim of child abuse. Ā It gives me great comfort in changing children's lives to experience positive living.

Alisa's Bio:

Alisa launched Madison Mom in August of 2013 and in 2015 she expanded as she co-founded Milwaukee Mom. In 2022 she became the sole owner of the Milwaukee site. The two sites reach over a million parents in southern WI each year and have become the go-to parenting resource for local families. In 2021, she established Ox Trail Media which serves as a consulting firm for events, social media and marketing.

Alisa was born and raised in small town Iowa before attending and graduating from Arizona State University with a degree in business finance and psychology. She then lived in Chicago, southern Georgia, Naples, FL and Des Moines, IA before settling in Madison in 2012 with her husband Joe and their three children (Ava, Nora & Jacob).

An introverted homebody at heart, Alisa loves to travel and to explore with her family. When sheā€™s not busy working from home (with her sweet Boston Terrier at foot) - you can find her sweating it out on her peloton or the tennis court; volunteering at her kids school; coaching youth sports; brunching with friends; and dreaming of the beach!

 


Episode 38 - The Most Difficult Subject for Moms: Sex Trafficking Awareness with Sheriff Kalvin Barrett

Krista and Shanna talk with Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett on the warning signs of sex trafficking and what parents should be aware of.

Kalvin Barrett is currently serving as the 53rd Dane County Sheriff. He was appointed by Governor Tony Evers following the retirement of former Sheriff, David Mahoney. He was then elected into the office in November of 2022.

Kalvin brings over a decade of experience as a peace officer, educator, and trainer to the Dane County Sheriffā€™s Office and continues the work of building an agency that reflects and responds to the communities it serves.

Originally from the San Diego area, Kalvin came to Madison in 2000 to attend the University of Wisconsin and to play football for the Wisconsin Badgers under legendary coach Barry Alvarez. Kalvin graduated in 2004 with a degree in sociology. During this time, he fell in love with the community and culture of Dane County.

Kalvin then moved to Texas to inspire junior high students as a science teacher and coach. In 2009, he returned to Dane County to begin his career as a peace officer, starting as a deputy at the Dane County Sheriffā€™s Office. In 2011, he joined the Sun Prairie Police Department as the first Black officer hired in the departmentā€™s history. Kalvin served as a Wisconsin State Fair Park Police Officer assigned to the dignitary protection team since 2019.

Most recently, Kalvin was an instructor at Madison College and a Faculty Director of the Criminal Justice Studies Program emphasizing community-oriented policing, professional development and diversity, amongst other topics. Kalvin was the lead Defense and Arrest Tactics instructor in the Madison College Law Enforcement Academy, and taught fundamentals of criminal justice, and agency policy as well.

Kalvin completed a masterā€™s degree in Criminal Justice in 2020.

Kalvin and his wife have two daughters who enjoy the outdoors and community service.
