The UW-Madison Department of Gender and Women’s Studies was founded in 1975. While other women’s studies programs were a hodgepodge of different faculty from different departments, UW-Madison's department controlled its own resources, curriculum, and governance from the start. Decision-making was all theirs.

End Domestic Abuse Wisconsin was founded in 1978. It was born out of the need for a statewide organization that could lead legislative advocacy on domestic abuse issues.

Zonta Club of Madison was founded in 1940. It’s part of Zonta International, which is a global organization of executives and professionals working together to empower women worldwide through advocacy and service.


Women's History Month: Raging Grannies of Madison

Raging Grannies of Madison started as a project of the Madison chapter of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, singing to the crowds of Madison anti-war protesters in the fall of 2003.


Women's History Month: National Organization for Women (NOW)

There’s a Wisconsin chapter and a Madison chapter of the National Organization for Women. NOW works to improve the status of women in the United States through advocacy, litigation, and education.
