Jillene’s Blog: Back To School Memories

Written by on August 27, 2020

It’s almost time to go back to “school,” or the kitchen table, or make-shift classroom in your living room. There’s no doubt, going back to school this year is a lot different in year’s past.

Still, with all the challenges you’re facing this year, I know you’ll make the best of it. This time of year has always been very nostalgic for me and brings back a lot of memories of my time in school… and it has me thinking of all the things I wish I had learned during my 12-13 years as a professional student!

It’s okay to be who you are, even if other people think you’re too loud/too quiet/too smart/not smart enough. You’re never going to be everyone’s cup of tea, and the sooner you figure that out, the sooner you will find your true self.

Not everything can be taught from a textbook. You will learn great lessons from conversations you have with people you know, and conversations you have with strangers. You will learn so much about yourself when you reach the goals you’ve set out to reach. You will learn about heartache and heartbreak and true love… and trust me, it’s nothing like the movies.

The cliché sayings that you’ve heard over and over again – “give more than you get,” “everything happens for a reason,” “live every day like it’s your last,” “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take,” (I could go on and on) – they’re true, and if you put them into practice into your life, they can help you achieve great things! That’s why they’ve been around for so long and on motivational posters all over the world.

Memorize your social security number, and learn basic life skills like how to do laundry, how to swim, how to cook, how to put on a spare tire, how to make and keep a budget, how to save money, how to read a map, and how to do basic math! (There’s nothing more frustrating than a cashier who can’t make change when the computers go down, and trust me… they will go down.)

Take care of yourself, your whole self: mentally, physically, spiritually, emotionally. Take care of your body. Treat it with love. Take care of your mind. Treat it with love. Take care your spirit. Treat it with love. Pay attention to your emotions and listen to your intuition. When you do, you’ll be surprised at the answers you already have.
